Hidden amongst the rigid, bustling corporate jungle of the Sydney CBD, a uni student,
yoga teacher, mum, musician, nurse, model and suit arrive at the French Centre, look each other up and down and wonder what’s in stall over the next 8 weeks…
With tornado-like enthusiasm, Professeur Giacomo, the Principal of the French Centre,
is a pedagogical, polyglot extraordinaire. He and his engaging, goddess-like teaching staff, dispel the handicapping misconceptions about the limits of one’s own learning potential, imparting their native-speaking knowledge with a smile and a laugh. Initially you are going to say a lot of dumb things whilst trying to say the correct thing in French. You will be ambiguous and miscommunicate. However at the French Centre, you will learn to embrace those mistakes. Reflect, have fun and forge ahead. I’m not going to blow smoke up your backside and say that it’s easy or there’s a shortcut to learning French. Learning any language requires core instruction, structured practice and there’s no substitute for motivation and persistence. The French Centre ticks all boxes. The uni student, yoga teacher, mum, musician, nurse, model and suit become great friends, Francophiles and look excitingly forward to the next 8 week course at the French Centre.

Coming from someone who previously struggled learning languages I would like
to express my thanks to the French Centre for providing a course that is fun and interactive. The teachers are masters in the craft and go into great detail in terms of pronunciation and structure which is imperative when learning a new language. The classes are relaxed and entertaining! A great perk is that they provide a booklet, CD's and videos which is a great help when revising. I would highly recommend the French Centre to anyone who wants to learn a new language in
a fun and supportive environment!

I started Beginners French at the French Centre for Language and Cultural Studies
at the beginning of 2015 and have continued through to the Intermediate classes. The French Centre is a great school. The classes are small and casual creating a friendly atmosphere and making it very easy for students to participate in class and practise to gain confidence.
The content is very practical. The use of story boards that present different dialogue
situations is an excellent way of learning how to converse while simultaneously learning about French grammar and phrases and how to use them. The recordings are also very useful for those who
wish to practise outside class time.
The teachers also share their knowledge and personal experiences about French culture
which is helpful particularly for those who intend on travelling to France. I continue to enjoy classes and would highly recommend this school!

Fun, affordable and also challenging way to learn French. Teachers
Noémie and Giacomo are really great and extremely friendly. Lots of time to practice. Course notes and downloadable CDs provided have been invaluable to revise lessons. I've finished the 3 Beginner courses and now on to Intermediate. Lots of examples of dialogues which
will be helpful when I travel to France.

I love the teaching style of the French Centre. If you want a French class that focuses on communication and pronunciation come to the French Centre. A special shout out to my teachers Giacomo and Flora who were both very engaging and kept the class fun and interactive.

I would like to express my excitement about studying at French Centre with such
talented and fun teachers that work there! I started only a month ago, but know already pretty
much of basics thanks to the thoughtfully prepared learning materials that include CDs with clear and easy way to learn that tricky French pronunciation! Apart from being digestible for any beginner, they are so much fun as well! Start to speak from day 1, tick! Art boutique style and cozy premises, tick! Flexible timetable, tick! Laughter therapy atmosphere, tick! Thank you French Centre for creating
this really motivating language island in an ocean of many boring courses :)

I am a week off finishing the Beginners 1 French course
at The French Centre and I highly recommend this course for anyone who wants to
learn French, for whatever reason. The classes are well-paced and emphasise the learning
of everyday phrases and correct pronunciation through repetition, visual learning and common conversational scenarios. Giacomo is an engaging teacher with an infectious laugh who ensures our learning process is not just a practice of memorisation but also involves an understanding of the history of the French language and its colloquialisms, and an entertaining and enjoyable
experience. I had no hesitation in signing up to the Beginners 2 class as well.
Whatever your reason for learning French, whether it be for fun, study, travel
or business, the French Centre is a great place to do so.

If you're looking for a place to learn French, THIS is the place to be!!
The atmosphere and the way you learn is very friendly, not intimidating and interactive. In the beginners course 1, you don't just learn the grammar and vocabulary and finish there, but with the many Story Board dialogues between 'Stephanie and David,' you practice repetition and being in conversation with your fellow classmates. The course notes, Story Board AND the mp3 recordings which you can download onto your phone or CD to take with you anywhere, help tremendously. The teacher is very nice and understanding, knows what he is doing, and knows how to just push you to do well! These interactive elements make the difference especially in pronunciation
(which we all know is hard in French..!)
Perfect place for new learners, people who already know a fair bit, the young and the old, so don't worry about feeling overwhelmed or embarrassed! Highly recommend.

I have loved my weekly classes at the french cultural and language centre.
A small group of strangers have slowly become friends over the past eight weeks as we struggle to conjugate verbs and giggle at pronunciation. Our teacher has been brilliant - knowing when to laugh at your pronunciation and when to gently correct you. I would highly recommend anyone attending this centre to learn a second language to travel or just to have a laugh and test that brain power!

Course outline:
In our Beginner 1 course, you'll learn how to invite someone to a café and order in a café, how to purchase fruit and vegetables at the market, how to ask for and understand directions. We learn about the "formal" and "informal" distinction and how to apply it. We learn about the "masculine" and "feminine", how to ask questions in French, how to talk a little about yourself and ask others about themselves ("What is your name?; How are you?; nationality; Whereabouts are you from?, etc), we start to learn how to "conjugate" the present tense of French verbs, and, of course, we learn the greetings, numbers and polite expressions.

Aiming for fluency in French?
Our French courses are ideal for those aiming to achieve a high degree of fluency in French. In our Beginner courses (Beginner 1, 2 & 3) we start to build up our French vocabulary, to master the pronunciation, to learn how to construct sentences, to develop conversational skills so that you can actually hold a conversation relating to both practical topics and conversational topics, and to gain an understanding of how the language works - i.e. the grammar which we explain in the simplest and clearest of manners.
French for travellers:
Even only a basic knowledge of French makes such a difference when visiting France. We assume that the vast majority of our students will be travelling to France, either for the first time or will be returning to France in the future, so our beginner courses cover also a wide range of topics ideal for travellers and you'll find them extremely useful in providing you with the basic French and the travel tips that will truly enhance your visit to this most beautiful of countries.
Our practice CDs:
Our French Practice CDs, available in Mp3 format, have proven to be very popular with our students. They allow you to practise the vocabulary, the expressions and phrases, and the dialogue covered in your French class by repeating it several times, each time leaving a gap so that you can repeat it yourself. One of the most appealing features of the Practice CDs is that you can download them to your phone and listen to them in your car, at the gym, whilst you catch public transport or take the dog for a walk, and they represent a continuation of the class outside of class. They are also very useful if you happen to miss a class altogether.
The French Centre course notes and Practice CDs in Mp3 format are available exclusively to enrolled French Centre students. |
Unsure of your level?
If you have studied French before, or you've been self-learning French, and you are wondering whether you should join the French Centre Beginner 1 course or a higher level course, please contact us to enquire. As a general guide, if you studied French, in Australia, in primary school and/or secondary school up to year 10, our Beginner 1 course is most likely to be the suitable course for you - you'll find that you'll be familiar with some of the content of the very first lesson of the Beginner 1 course but after that we'll be covering what will be new ground for you. If you studied French in Year 11, you may or may not be suited to the Beginner 1 course: it depends very much how long ago it was and how far into year 11 you studied French. If you studied French in year 12, at university as an undergraduate, or at another school, no matter how long ago it was, please do call us as the Beginner 1 course is not a "refresher" course: it assumes no prior knowledge. Also, if you've learnt a foreign language or other foreign languages, and you know - no need to be modest - that you are very good at picking up languages please call us before enrolling as it may be more appropriate and challenging for you to skip a level and cover the previous level via the CDs. You would still have, thanks to the "storyboards", ample opportunity to practise in class the previous level's topics.
